Migration Economics

Migration economics: Integration and affects on receiving countries // Migrationsökonomie: Integration und die Auswirkungen auf Empfängerländer

Taught by:

Pia Schilling

Topics

Migration has increased significantly in recent decades and is a key aspect of globalization. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that the number of international migrants will reach 281 million in 2020, accounting for 3.6 percent of the world's population. The topic is also of great importance for economists who evaluate causes and consequences of migration in the host countries and countries of origin.

In the seminar, we will focus in particular on integration issues (social integration, labor market integration, integration into the school system, integration measures, etc) and analyze the effects that immigration has in the receiving countries.

Therefore, students will first familiarize themselves with the literature (the literature list will be distributed at the beginning of the seminar). The course consists of a one- to two-day seminar in which students present a research paper of their choice and outline their own research idea. The Bachelor's thesis can then be developed from this research idea.

Grading is based on the seminar presentation and the exposé.

The presentation and exposé/seminar paper can be given/written in German or English.
