Diversity Conference & Travel Grants

The ASAB 2019 summer conference in Konstanz will be equitable and inclusive to delegates from around the world. To help dismantle barriers that prevent underrepresented researchers in the field of animal behaviour from attending conferences, we're delighted to offer Diversity Conference and Travel Scholarships for early career researcher attendees currently residing in developing countries (see below for definitions).

Award Program Details

Funded by the Centre for the Advanced Study of Collective Behaviour, The Company of Biologists , the DFG and the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour, the aim of the scholarships is to allow early career researchers to attend an international behaviour conference that they would otherwise not be able to afford. Each selected awardee receives:

  • Waived conference registration fee
  • Round-trip airfare
  • Dorm accommodations (double occupancy)
  • A 50 euro meal stipend*
  • Ticket to the Gala Dinner
  • Visa fees

*Note: The 50 euros will be provided as a reimbursement at the meeting.

To further ease financial constraints, scholarships will be provided in advance (not as reimbursements). The application deadline is 6 May and decisions will be announced by 16 May.

Application Details

Applications consist of:

  • Title, author line, and abstract of the talk to be presented by the applicant.
  • CV
  • A one-page statement of academic interests and career goals, including how attending the ASAB meeting will help meet these goals.
  • Budget estimate, indicating how much financial support will be required
  • A letter of recommendation from the applicant’s research advisor.
  • Proof of current university enrollment for graduate students or PhD diploma for postdocs.

Please submit the full application and letter of recommendation in PDF format via email to Nora Carlson (asab.konstanz.science@orn.mpg.de). Please put use “Diversity Student Travel Grant ASAB2019 – last name” in the subject line of the email.

Eligibility

Diversity Conference and Travel Scholarships are open to early career researchers from, and based in, developing countries. Countries classified as developing countries for this purpose are those whose economies are listed by the World Bank as “Low income”, “Lower Middle Income”, or “Upper Middle Income” in the World Bank list of economies (see list). However, based on exceptional circumstances and availability of funds, individuals either based in OR from developing countries may be considered.

Selection criteria include quality of abstract, diversity, and need.

Individuals must be graduate students (masters or PhD) or early career researchers (postdoc who has held their PhD for 3 years or less). In the event of unavoidable delays to research career (see below) PhDs held for more than 3 years will be considered.
