Welcome
Our programme has two objectives. First, to provide students with a modern and comprehensive postgraduate education in economics in line with the highest international standards. Second, to lay the foundations for a wide range of challenging careers in the private and public sectors, for instance, in national and multinational companies, banks, consulting firms, insurance companies, national and local government, research institutes, universities, and international organisations. The programme focuses on the use of economic theory and empirical methods as tools for understanding, modelling and evaluating real world economic issues. In the compulsory subject area Quantitative Economics students acquire advanced skills in economic theory and econometrics, which find application in a broad spectrum of economic issues covered in the programme’s five optional subject areas: Econometrics and Applied Economics, International Financial Economics, Macroeconomics and International Economics, Microeconomics and Decision Making and Public Economics. Three study routes are offered to give students the flexibility of customising their Master’s studies in accordance with their academic interests and career aspirations. Track A is the fast track to a PhD. Following the first year of the Master’s programme, students with an outstanding performance record and a strong interest in academic research can be admitted to our Doctoral Programme in Quantitative Economics and Finance and take courses towards their doctoral degree during the second year of their Master’s studies. Track B enables students to sharpen their academic profile by majoring in one of the five optional subject areas of the programme. Track C is for students aiming for a general postgraduate education in economics, who create their own programme of study from the wide range of courses and seminars available in the optional subject areas. The Department of Economics of the University of Konstanz enjoys an outstanding reputation in teaching and research.
