Research profile

Our Department's research tackles economic connections from various perspectives. All research activities are based on theoretical and empirical approaches. Our main focus is economics, other focus areas are business administration as well as business and economics education.

Excellence in research

From the very beginning of the Excellence Initiative in 2006, the University of Konstanz has been successful in all three funding lines of the Excellence Initiative. We strongly contribute to the Graduate School of Decision Sciences which is one of the projects funded by the Excellence Initiative.

The University of Konstanz is know for its excellence in acquiring third-party funds. It is ranked first when it comes to the absolute funding sum per professor and second country-wide in humanities and social sciences according to the DFG funding atlas.

"The University of Konstanz creates contact points and the framework for researchers to break new ground in science through the interfacing of our departments. That is the Konstanz model for top-level research."
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ulrich Rüdiger, Rector, University of Konstanz

Research cooperations

Our department is intensively involved in national and international cooperations. The Swiss-German Thurgau Institute of Economics (TWI) conducts high level research for the whole area around the Lake of Constance. Our researchers also involved in interdisciplinary research centres - among those the Graduate School of Decision Sciences. Young researchers benefit from our joint doctoral programme with the Augustin Cournot Doctoral School in Strasbourg.

Promotion of young researchers

In accordance with the University's strategy we strive towards hiring the best young researchers, offering them excellent conditions such as a large degree of freedom in order to achieve international competitiveness. Our Department successfully trains doctoral candidates and has implemented various junior professorships.

Our Doctoral Programme in Quantitative Economics and Finance hathe s been the first structured PhD programme at the University. With our success in the excellence initiative a second programme, the interdisciplinary Graduate School of Decision Sciences has been added.

Furthermore, we are remarkably successful in promoting our junior professors. So far, all junior professors have been appointed to W3 professorships - mostly in less then the 6 years intended.
